Colon cleansing in different forms has been in use for 4000 years .Opinions about its effect on overall health are sometimes misleading. Some experts believe that colon cleansing is not necessary at all while there are others who believe that unless you keep cleansing your colon regularly, your colon will start producing toxins. Let us have a look at truth about colon cleansing.
Colon is located at the end of the small intestine and its main task is to retain water and salt from the digested food and throw the fecal matter out the body. When the food we eat is digested, it passes through the colons to get excreted. However, certain food items like fatty, oily and sugary item are not digested properly. The undigested food is passed through the colons therefore it starts taking some space in the colon.
Colon has a natural inbuilt system to protect itself from unwanted food items that it is not meant to excrete under normal circumstances. It releases mucus around its internal walls so that undigested food cannot harm it. However there is a limit to mucus formation. If we keep eating processed food for years, mucus will keep forming and one day colon will find it difficult to move. This is what we call constipation.
In such a situation something external is required that can help the colon to throw all the fecal matter so that it can function properly. This is what colon cleansing is all about. Colon cleansing refers to a combined process of forcing solid fecal matter, mucus and sludge out of our body. It also includes detoxification which means clearing all the chemical toxins as well.
Colon cleansing and detoxification is required at regular intervals. Some are comfortable with cleansing colons once every six month while for others it may also be once a year. It depends upon your body type and the kind of food you normally eat. If you eat fat free and fiber rich diet with a lot of water you may not require colon cleansing at all.
